CEJIL 30 Years: Women of Atenco

On May 3 and 4, 2006, during a protest in San Salvador de Atenco, 31 women were victims of physical, psychological and sexual torture perpetrated by the Mexican State after they illegally detained the women. The events took place in a context of violence against women and excessive use of force by the police forces in Mexico. In April 2008, eleven of these women, together with the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL) and the Centro de los Derechos Humanos Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez A.C. (PRODH), presented their case before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR)

In 2018, the Inter-American Court declared that the Mexican government is internationally responsible for grave human rights violations committed against the 11 women who suffered illegal and arbitrary detentions; physical, psychological and sexual torture; and lack of access to justice.
