The Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL) seeks a Communications Officer to work in the communications team and implement the communications plan for the Andean Region and the Brazil and Southern Cone Program. This is a dynamic position that must be filled by a person who can contribute to support the implementation of a coherent and holistic communications plan across the regional programs in our offices.

For this role, CEJIL seeks a professional who is bilingual in English and Spanish (proficiency in Portuguese highly desired), preferably with experience in human rights promotion and advocacy in Latin America, as well as someone who will contribute to our institutional and internal communications.

Founded in 1991, CEJIL is an organization dedicated to promoting human rights in the Americas. CEJIL seeks to address human rights violations in the region and generate positive social change through strategic litigation before the Inter-American Human Rights System (IAHRS), as well as through the incorporation of multi-level advocacy, capacity building, and media work at both the national and international level. Through its litigation of 200 human rights cases, CEJIL fights for more than 27,000 victims of human rights violations across 21 countries in Latin America and the United States. These cases address a variety of issues which include gender-based violence, migrant rights, massacres, and modern slavery, among many others. The Communications Officer reports to the Director of Communications and will work closely with staff at all levels of the organization. He/she will have the opportunity to be part of a dynamic and multicultural team of committed human rights defenders who primarily work in Latin America.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

– Implement the communication plan for the organization’s Andean Region and the Brazil and Southern Cone Program, including media relations, campaigns, and online and internal communication.

– Support work plans and actions on issues related to the represented cases and the main priorities of the offices.

– Ensure the consistency of CEJIL’s brand through external communications.

– Liaise with external consultants for the program areas.

– Propose new outreach/dissemination tools for specific audiences.

– Contribute to creative strategies, item production, and content development for CEJIL’s priority audiences.

– Be a contact point for partner organizations, counterparts, and communication offices in the region.

– Coordinate processes with the communications and programming departments.

– General support in hearings with IACHR – IA-Court for the offices.

 

1.Media relations and press management. 

– Write and edit trilingual press materials (brochures, op-eds and press releases).

– Respond promptly to media requests.

– Maintain relationships with key journalists covering human rights, Latin America, and the OAS.

– Maintain up-to-date contact lists with the media.

– Monitor media coverage of news stories.

2.Online Communications

– Produce content for the trilingual website (Spanish, English and Portuguese).

– Accompany social media strategies for advocacy and institutional development. 

 

REQUIREMENTS

-Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or related fields. Master’s Degree preferred. 

-Professional-level fluency in Spanish and English (written and oral). Portuguese is highly desirable.

-Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a communications or advocacy officer (preferably in NGOs or Agencies).

-Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple demands quickly/effectively.

-Strong writing, editing and verbal communication skills. 

-Experience in advocacy and multimedia campaigns.

-Experience in developing and executing digital media communication strategies.

-Commitment to and knowledge of human rights and Latin America.

 

TERMS: The position is full-time (40 hours per week). 

SALARY: Commensurate with location and experience, based on national nonprofit scale. CEJIL offers an excellent benefits package which includes paid vacation and statutory benefits, in accordance with country of location, as well as health insurance pay.
