Environmental and human rights attorney

The Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL) is seeking an attorney with experience and expertise in environmental and human rights to coordinate CEJIL’s projects and initiatives in this area, including strategic litigation at the national and international levels, advocacy with various actors, investigations, among other responsibilities.

This is a full-time position for a period of one year, with the potential for renewal. The person must be located in a Latin American country or in Washington D.C.

The person filling this role will have the opportunity to be part of a dynamic and multicultural team of people committed to the defense of human rights in the region.

CEJIL is a regional organization whose mission is the promotion and protection of human rights in the Americas through the use of the tools provided by the Inter-American Human Rights System and other international protection mechanisms.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to CEJIL’s mission, purpose and values.
  • Languages: advanced fluency in Spanish and English. Knowledge of Portuguese will be considered a plus.
  • Education: Completed law degree from an accredited university. A completed Master’s Degree will be considered a plus.
  • Knowledge and work experience:
  • Knowledge and experience working on environmental issues, ideally on climate change and its impact on human rights, is required. Knowledge of methane will be highly valued.
  • At least seven years of work experience in human rights.
  • Location: The person filling this role should be based in a Latin American country or in Washington D.C.
  • Travel: willingness to travel and work in a multicultural environment.
  • Salary: commensurate with experience and location.

Required Skills

  • Strong communication skills to develop convincing legal arguments and establish ties with relevant stakeholders.
  • Ability to write and edit reports and/or papers clearly and persuasively in the required languages.
  • Analytical and strategic planning skills.
  • Ability to manage time appropriately, establish priorities, work under pressure, and on several projects at the same time.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and in a team.
  • Project management experience highly desired.
  • Litigation experience at national or international level.

Main responsibilities

  • Litigate cases before the Inter-American Commission and Court of Human Rights and at the national level under the supervision of the Executive Directorate and the Legal Directorate of CEJIL.
  • Support with the coordination of different projects related to climate change and human rights.
  • Follow up on cases in litigation filed by CEJIL in close coordination with partner organizations and/or counterparts.
  • Conduct research related to their area.
  • Design and implement advocacy strategies and actions in accordance with institutional planning and organizational objectives.
  • Support CEJIL’s communications team in the preparation of relevant material.
  • Support the management and leadership team in the strategic planning of activities related to the projects and initiatives under his/her responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
