The Monumental Task of Bringing Truth, Justice and Non-Repetition To a Fractured Colombia

Colombia’s Commission on Truth, Coexistence, and Non-Repetition began its mandate to report on Colombia’s 52-year civil conflict on November 29, 2018. The 11-member commission and its Ethnic Division represented a victory for Colombia’s minorities who have suffered disproportionate violence and discrimination. Two of the Commissioners, Patricia Tobón Yagarí (Embera) and Angela Salazar (Afro-Colombian), will present on the Commission’s work to date. In order to guarantee that the ethnic perspective is fully integrated into the transitional justice system, ethnic minorities within the system organized an Ethnic Commission. This Commission organized a consultation process at the regional level with Afro-Colombian, indigenous and rom communities in order to guarantee that their view is integrated into their work. The panelists will discuss the important regional work done by the Truth Commission, its methodology and how they are advancing in spite of budget cuts and other obstacles.
