General Assembly of the OAS renewed four members of the IACHR

San Salvador, June 7, 2011. The General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) today elected in El Salvador four of seven members of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) for a term of four years from January 2012. The Chilean Felipe González was reelected for a period of four years.
The three new members of the Commission are Jamaican Tracy Robinson, the Paraguayan Rosa Maria Ortiz and Rose-Marie Belle Antoine Belizean.
The commissioners and commissioners carry out their work independently so they do not represent any state but fulfill their personal capacity, independently. Each member of the Commission exercises its duties for a period of four years with possibility of reelection for an equal period.
Those elected begin their mandate in January 2012. The integration of the Commission’s complete US Dinah Shelton, Colombian Rodrigo Escobar Gil and Mexican José de Jesús Orozco Henríquez, whose mandates culminate in 2013. and new members the Commission replaced the Brazilian Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, the Salvadoran María Silvia Guillén and the Venezuelan Luz Patricia Mejía Guerrero.
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is based in Washington, United States, along with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, is a primary organ of the OAS. The Commission has the principal function of promoting the observance and protection of human rights.
