International Justice
Since our inception, one of our main focuses has been strengthening the core functions and effectiveness of the Inter-American Human Rights System (IAHRS). We have issued recommendations, published proposals, and developed transparent, simplified procedures to ensure that the IAHRS can respond rapidly to assist the most vulnerable groups across the region.
We have also sought to improve access to information on jurisprudence and other tools for responding to serious human rights violations. For example, we created SUMMA, an online database of IAHRS jurisprudence, which allows users to gain further understanding regarding the roles of the Inter-American Commission and Court, as well as access all information regarding their past rulings.
We have also worked to improve the nomination and selection processes for members of the Commission and Court, including the Executive Secretary and rapporteurship posts at the IACHR. In order to better advocate for gender parity in international representation, we established the GQUAL campaign in 2015. By working hand-in-hand with hundreds of partner organizations, funders, civil society representatives, academics, youth activists, and journalists, we can strengthen the IAHRS, make it more inclusive and reflective of the world we want to live in, and guarantee the continued and improved defense of human rights.
