Nicaragua must implemment UN resolution

The Americas, 11 August 2021- Thirteen human rights organizations joined forces to measure the level of implementation by Nicaragua’s government of United Nations Human Rigths Council (UN-HRC) recommendations, listed in resolution 46/2 passed on March 23, 2021.

We assessed the 14 recommendations  using objective indicators and public information from the UN and Inter-American human rights system, as well as independent civil society and journalists. Based on this assessment, we have concluded that the Government of Nicaragua has taken NO action to implement recommendations in resolution 46/2; instead it has rejected any criticism as “interventionist and supremacist.”

The Government of Nicaragua has taken actions contrary to UN-HRC recommendations, resulting in a drastic reduction of civic space and an increase in attacks on human rights defenders, journalists, presidential candidates, and dissidents.

We urge Government of Nicaragua to end the ongoing repression immediately; release all political prisoners; and adopt all necessary measures to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections. And we call on the international community to continue monitoring, documenting, and expressing collective concerns on the grave human rights situation facing the people of Nicaragua.
