What is the Inter-American System of Human Rights?

Aiming at promoting and protecting the rights established in the American Convention on the duties and rights of man (1948), the Organization of American States (OAS) created the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR) (1959) and the Inter-American (IA) Court (1978). These two organs comprised the Inter-American System of Human Rights (ISHR). While the work of the Commission lies in three main areas (the individual petition system -contentious cases, the monitoring of the human rights situation in States Members and the special focus on specific human rights thematic areas), the work of the Court consists primarily of resolving those contentious cases that couldn´t be solved within the Commission and are sent by this organ to the Court´s jurisdiction.
